    Solitary smooth hump solutions of the Camassa-Holm equation by means of the homotopy analysis method

    The homotopy analysis method is used to find a family of solitary smooth hump solutions of the Camassa-Holm equation. This approximate solution, which is obtained as a series of exponentials, agrees well with the known exact solution. This paper complements the work of Wu & Liao [Wu W, Liao S. Solving solitary waves with discontinuity by means of the homotopy analysis method. Chaos, Solitons & Fractals 2005;26:177-85] who used the homotopy analysis method to find a different family of solitary wave solutions

    Alignment procedure of the LHCb Vertex Detector

    LHCb is one of the four main experiments of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) project, which will start at CERN in 2008. The experiment is primarily dedicated to B-Physics and hence requires precise vertex reconstruction. The silicon vertex locator (VELO) has a single hit precision of better than 10 micron and is used both off-line and in the trigger. These requirements place strict constraints on its alignment. Additional challenges for the alignment arise from the detector being retracted between each fill of the LHC and from its unique circular disc r/phi strip geometry. This paper describes the track based software alignment procedure developed for the VELO. The procedure is primarily based on a non-iterative method using a matrix inversion technique. The procedure is demonstrated with simulated events to be fast, robust and to achieve a suitable alignment precision.Comment: accepted for publication in NIM

    The LHCb Vertex Locator contains 42 silicon sensor modules. Each module has two silicon sensors. A method for determining the relative alignment of the silicon sensors within each module from data is presented. The software implementation details are discussed. Monte-Carlo simulation studies are described that demonstrate an alignment precision of 1.3 micron is obtained in the sensor plane

    Solitary-wave solutions of the Degasperis-Procesi equation by means of the homotopy analysis method

    The homotopy analysis method is applied to the Degasperis-Procesi equation in order to find analytic approximations to the known exact solitary-wave solutions for the solitary peakon wave and the family of solitary smooth-hump waves. It is demonstrated that the approximate solutions agree well with the exact solutions. This provides further evidence that the homotopy analysis method is a powerful tool for finding excellent approximations to nonlinear solitary waves

    Impact of a theoretically based sex education programme (SHARE) delivered by teachers on NHS registered conceptions and terminations: final results of cluster randomised trial

    <b>Objective</b>: To assess the impact of a theoretically based sex education programme (SHARE) delivered by teachers compared with conventional education in terms of conceptions and terminations registered by the NHS. Design Follow-up of cluster randomised trial 4.5 years after intervention. <b>Setting</b>: NHS records of women who had attended 25 secondary schools in east Scotland. <b>Participants</b>: 4196 women (99.5% of those eligible). <b>Intervention</b>: SHARE programme (intervention group) v existing sex education (control group). <b>Main outcome measure</b>: NHS recorded conceptions and terminations for the achieved sample linked at age 20. <b>Results</b>: In an "intention to treat" analysis there were no significant differences between the groups in registered conceptions per 1000 pupils (300 SHARE v 274 control; difference 26, 95% confidence interval –33 to 86) and terminations per 1000 pupils (127 v 112; difference 15, –13 to 42) between ages 16 and 20. <b>Conclusions</b>: This specially designed sex education programme did not reduce conceptions or terminations by age 20 compared with conventional provision. The lack of effect was not due to quality of delivery. Enhancing teacher led school sex education beyond conventional provision in eastern Scotland is unlikely to reduce terminations in teenagers

    Can psychometric testing be used to explain, predict and measure behavioural competences and the funding resource orchestration of the entrepreneur?

    Financing is a critical entrepreneurial activity (Shane et al. 2003) and within the study of entrepreneurship, behaviour has been identified as an area requiring further exploration (Bird et al. 2012). Since 2008 supply side conditions for SMEs have been severe and increasingly entrepreneurs have to bundle or ‘orchestrate’ funding from a variety of sources in order to successfully finance the firm (Wright and Stigliani 2013: p.15). This longitudinal study uses psychometric testing to measure the behavioural competences of a panel of sixty entrepreneurs in the Creative Industries sector. Interviews were conducted over a 3 year period to identify finance finding behaviour. The research takes a pragmatic realism perspective to examine process and the different behavioural competences of entrepreneurs. The predictive qualities of this behaviour are explored in a funding context. The research confirmed a strong behavioural characteristic as validated through interviews and psychometric testing, was an orientation towards engagement and working with other organisations. In a funding context, this manifested itself in entrepreneurs using networks, seeking advice and sharing equity to fund growth. These co-operative, collaborative characteristics are different to the classic image of the entrepreneur as a risk-taker or extrovert. Leadership and achievement orientation were amongst the lowest scores. Three distinctive groups were identified and also shown by subsequent analysis to be a positive contribution to how entrepreneurial behavioural competences can be considered. Belonging to one of these three clusters is a strong predictive indicator of entrepreneurial behaviour – in this context, how entrepreneurs access finance. These Clusters were also proven to have different characteristics in relation to funding outcomes. The study seeks to make a contribution through the development of a methodology for entrepreneurs, policy makers and financial institutions to identify competencies in finding finance and overcome problems in information asymmetry

    The software alignment of the Vertex Locator (VELO) is a critical component of the LHCb alignment strategy. This note demonstrates a potential algorithm to perform the alignment of the VELO detector-halves. The approach described in this document, and the tools developed, are also applicable to the alignment of the other LHCb sub-systems and the global relative alignment of the sub-detectors

    Test Facility and Preliminary Performance of a 100 kW Class MPD Thruster

    A 260 kW magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD) thruster test facility was assembled and used to characterize thrusters at power levels up to 130 kW using argon and helium propellants. Sensitivities of discharge characteristics to arc current, mass flow rate, and applied magnetic field were investigated. A thermal efficiency correlation developed by others for low power MPD thrusters defined parametric guidelines to minimize electrode losses in MPD thrusters. Argon and helium results suggest that a parameter defined as the product of arc voltage and the square root of the mass flow rate must exceed 0.7 V/kg(sup 1/2)/sec(sup 1/2) in order to obtain thermal efficiencies in excess of 60 percent

    Between tradition and modernity: Girls' talk about sexual relationships and violence in Kenya, Ghana and Mozambique

    This paper interrogates the influence of a tradition-modernity dichotomy on perspectives and practices on sexual violence and sexual relationships involving girls in three districts of Kenya, Ghana and Mozambique. Through deploying an analytical framework of positioning within multiple discursive sites, we argue that although the dichotomy misrepresents the complexity of contemporary communities, it is nonetheless deployed by girls, educational initiatives, and researchers in their reflections on girls’ sexual practices and sexual violence. The analysis examines variations between communities in patterns of and perspectives about sexual relationships, transactional sex and sexual violence. It illuminates ways in which features of ‘modernisation’ and ‘tradition’ both exacerbate and protect girls from violence. Across contexts, girls actively positioned themselves between tradition and modernity, while positioning others at the extreme poles. Education initiatives also invoked bipolar positions in their attempts to protect girls’ rights to education and freedom from violence. The paper concludes by considering the implications for educational intervention and the potential for the analytical framing to generate richer, more contextualised understandings about girls’ perspectives, experiences and ways of resisting sexual violence
